Mauna `Ala is the final resting place for most of Hawai`i’s royalty. The peaceful grounds are open during the week (Mon through Fri, 8-430) and a caretaker is usually on duty. There are no formal tours and no self-guided tour markers. A sweeping kamani tree dominates the front of the grounds and the chapel is built in a Gothic style. Visitors are welcome to view the grounds, pay their respects and meditate briefly in the chapel. School groups occasionally visit as part of their Hawaiian history classes and more formal celebrations occasionally occur to commemorate one of the monarch’s birthdays. No picnicing is allowed out of respect for the dead.
